From Childhood to Motherhood – What Mother’s Day Means to Me

Celebrated at Church My earliest memory of Mother’s Day is doing something at church for all mothers. The service usually involved well-rehearsed plays by kids, singing, and giving out a few trophies to mums. Every denomination marked it on a different Sunday so it wasn’t really a country-wide holiday but it was certainly orchestrated by the Church. I didn’t have to do anything special for my mum outside of that (well nothing I can remember anyway). My mum certainly didn’t demand it so it was all fairly easy-going. Celebrated by Text I only learnt about Mothering Sunday as “holiday” after moving to a different country. It really struck me how…

Third Trimester Pregnancy Update (Week 30)- Has the Countdown Begun?

Can’t quite believe I’m in the third trimester already. 30 weeks! The countdown should be well underway but that would highlight how unprepared I am – emotionally, mentally and physically. What’s changed since the halfway update? Wriggly Baby I started feeling baby move quite early on which was lovely. I was dreading the kicking and jumping on bladder phase but baby is more of a wriggler than a kicker. Movements appear gentler  (for now) or maybe my tolerance levels have increased since first baby. Heavier Bump OK, this may seem like a ‘duh’ observation but the weight issue only hit me at the 30 week mark. Turning in bed suddenly…

Lush Sleepy Review – Baby and M-I-L’s Verdict

Little one was still waking up every 2 hours at night when I returned to work after maternity leave. Let’s just say I had a few lunchtime naps in the breastfeeding room (I was pumping twice a day). I got into work one morning (a couple of months after I’d started) and a colleague excitedly told me about an article claiming that Lush Sleepy Lotion had worked wonders for a toddler. Until now, I didn’t realise how obvious my sleep deprivation was as she offered to go get me some immediately as apparently it was starting to sell out. I wasn’t convinced but I was open to trying *almost* anything…

Do I Show More Affection To My Child Than My Husband?

I recently met up with my husband for lunch and as we parted ways, we exchanged a quick goodbye peck. That’s when I realised that I definitely show more affection to my 17-month old than to my husband. Not consciously I might add, but it’s seems to be a gradual change that has gone unnoticed or I’ve refused to acknowledge until now. How Did This Happen? Don’t worry, I won’t make you cringe with intimate details of our relationship but suffice to say that becoming a parent has changed both of us in more ways than I ever imagined. Sleep deprivation, exhaustion, co-sleeping, to name but a few, are huge…

  • How Did The First Nursery Goodbye Wave Go?

7 months after starting nursery, I finally got a goodbye wave from my little one. It was a shy, short wave while he was being carried by the nursery worker. It was a really big deal to the worker as everyday I dropped him off, the workers would repeatedly try to get him to say goodbye. But he’d either jet off to the toys or look at me with big sad eyes until I left. This particular drop-off started with the sad expression. However, the third time he was asked, he actually did a little wave. The worker was overjoyed but I had a sudden, overwhelming need to cry. I…

  • Family Fridays #5 – Baby Brain,  Craft and Pizza Express

I’ve been back at work for just over a month now but yet to find a regular Friday activity for me and the little one. Mainly because I want to nap when he naps and most of the activities are during his nap time. However, I was determined to make more effort today! I searched online for suitable, local Children Centre activities and found something that could possibly fit in with our schedule. It was one of those 1st and 3rd Fridays malarkey so I made sure we’d got the right week – which isn’t as easy as you might think when running on little sleep! Before setting out, I finally got…

  • Pregnancy Update Week 20 - Halfway There

Pregnancy Update Week 20 – We’re Halfway There

If you’re not aware, Baby G2 is due this year. Eeeek! Woooo! Aaarrghh! Yaaaay! Crazy times with 2 under 2 lies ahead. So how has it been so far? First Trimester As with Baby G1, I haven’t had any debilitating symptoms just the usual list: Extreme tiredness – I wanted my bed by 8pm latest but this didn’t really affect my non-existent night life Nausea without vomiting – I know how bad this can be for some so I feel really blessed that the nausea didn’t follow-through Bloating – I was half convinced twins were in there as I looked really pregnant very early on. Even the other half agreed so it…

  • First day of 2018 – How did it go?

Hello, first day of 2018! New year’s eve was meant to be a quiet one for me but the fireworks squashed that plan. Poor little one was very unsettled by the loud bangs and nothing I tried would get him back to sleep. So I was having a late night for very different reasons to some who may be nursing a sore head this morning or recounting exciting tales! How did we start the year At midnight, I had a child trying to sit on my face while I reached round to wish my husband Happy New Year! At least we were all together for it. Mental note: check if…

  • English Words 16 Months - The Growing Mum

    English Words at 16 Months

After 6 months of being in the baby room at Nursery, it was time for my toddler to move on. He was graduating from a Starfish to a Seahorse.  Who comes up with these names? I found out about the impending move via a form in his Nursery bag. Most of the questions were irrelevant as they were tailored to a new joiner. The baby and toddler rooms had the same workers and functioned as one entity as there were only ever 1 or 2 babies present so they were familiar with his routine. My responses were somewhat passive aggressive with a running theme of ‘As per current routine…

General Survival Tips for New Mums and Mums-to-be

I was completely thrown when a friend, who is expecting, asked for my ultimate tip for a new mum. I quickly scanned the memories of the last year in an effort to come up with one advice but there were just too many to choose from. I ended up rambling and saying something like: You’ll be given lots of advice on every aspect of parenting. If there’s anything you don’t agree with, listen, smile then follow your instincts in your own home. Back home, I replayed the conversation in my head and thought of different things I could have said as is always the case. Curious as to what other…
